I would like to say that the populations of pikas on Mt. Shasta are
healthy, but the fact is that I typically only see a single pika at a
locality and the localities are actually few and far between. The
overall numbers must be very low, but, on the other hand, their
environment has not changed much in a hundred years and they have
maintained their continuity through time.
I have heard pikas calling and giving response several times during my
investigations, but the pikas on Mt. Shasta are, as noticed in 1898,
much less noisy than their nearby cousins. I have hunted and found
pikas in the Lava Beds National Monument and in Mt. Lassen National
Park, and in both cases, the pikas were rather noisy during my visit at
least as compared to those on Mt. Shasta.
